castles and fortified villages

The Casentino is a land rich in history, with a cultural and architectural heritage reflected in its castles and fortified villages. This Tuscan region offers a variety of fascinating places to explore, each with its own unique history.

walks and pilgrimage

In Italy there are more than 6500 km of naturalistic, religious, cultural and spiritual paths. Podere Maria Lena is located along one of these paths: the Via Romea Germanica.

First described in 1256 by Alberto di Stadev, a travelling monk, the Via Romea Germanica was the most important route for medieval pilgrims coming from northern Europe. Today we can still walk it, in 94 stages totalling about 2000 km.

Casentino sanctuaries and hermitages

The Casentino is a very special corner of Tuscany! This enchanting valley is immersed in beautiful beech, fir and chestnut forests that hide unique sanctuaries and hermitages. These places of faith offer the possibility of rediscovering an authentic peace, far from the chaos of the modern world. Among the most suggestive destinations are the Sanctuary of La Verna, where St Francesco of Assisi received the stigmata, and the Hermitage of Camaldoli, founded by St Romualdo, and the Pieve di Romena.
